RICHARD OF BORDEAUX
(above) Mr John Gielgud is here posed beside the doll representing him in his successful role of Richard II in Gordon Daviot's play, "Richard of Bordeaux", at the New. The puppet is an excellent example of the portrait dolls made by Hanna Gaertner, the well-known sculptress from Vienna. These dolls, which resemble their subjects very closely, have firm, but pliable bodies, which can take any position, and are an interesting artistic "side-line" which Hanna Gaertner carries on in addition to her work in stone and bronze. The jewels and costume details are correct. (left) Here the dolls are standing up, so that Richard's fringed cloak may be seen. The ring on Anne's finger should be noted.
